The 2018 Business Outlook Forum, held on April 25th, 2018, was the second successful event of its kind. It was co-hosted by four student-run business organizations on campus, including the Business Club, Accounting Society, Agribusiness Club, and Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity. The Diamond Key Professional Development Program, led by Susan Szasz, was also a key contributor.
The event featured three California State University Monterey Bay alumni: Joti Kaur, Coy Williams, and Amairani Resendiz.
The Forum provided a wonderful networking opportunity for College of Business students to meet alumni who can relate to their experiences as students, but who can also teach them about the reality of being in the workforce. Students made connections with the alumni panelists and other students that may be beneficial in the future.
The panel discussion focused on the transition from being an undergraduate university student to becoming a member of the workforce. Alumni shared their experiences and provided insights on how to successfully navigate this transition. Students attending the Forum were advised to resist being overzealous early on, and instead learn how the company does things before trying to change the system. Other valuable advice: show up on time; under-promise and over-deliver; never stop learning; and don’t set expectations too high, but patiently work your way up.
The panelists also shared the things that surprised them most about their fields, including the importance of technology, the fast pace of the job, the need to be mentally prepared 24/7, and that due dates are hard & fast deadlines.
Through the Business Outlook Forum, student club officers and members were able to gain hands-on experience in event organization, develop leadership skills, broaden areas interests, and contribute to laying the foundation of the College of Business and help fulfill its vision.
