Dean's Message - February 2024

Greetings to all of our friends and colleagues,

The Spring 2024 term started with a well-attended orientation for new students. The theme for the weekend was "Students and Student Services welcoming students." Most student clubs were represented, including the Hospitality Club and the Human Resources Club. Professors Sharon Hua and Gary Schneider talked with the accounting students about the Accounting Boot Camp and the expectations for the start of the term. I was there to help out; Nikita Prasad, our Associated Students Senator, was there as well. Thank you to all of our wonderful faculty and staff who made the weekend a success!

Monday, the first day of the term, started with a one-day work stoppage; our faculty were warm and welcoming of our students on Tuesday. I am so proud of our COB Faculty team; they are the best!

One of the major achievements at the end of the Fall term was the adoption of our modified 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, which is pivotal to our success in developing our Initial Self-Study for AACSB accreditation. We will host Joe DiAngelo (Business Dean) and Vana Zervanos (Associate Dean) for a “mock” Peer Review Team (PRT) visit at the end of February. Both are experts in AACSB standards who are taking time out of their busy schedules from their home University, St. Joseph's to meet with us and help us prepare for the next phase of accreditation.

I close this newsletter with our celebration of the Pebble Beach Company Scholars Program, which we announced in early January. This is the first of many Scholar's Programs here at CSUMB. Hats off to Paige Viren, who built on the foundation that John Avella started with Pebble Beach Company. This Scholar's Program is designed to be a magnet to draw talented students to the Sustainable Hospitality Management Program in the College of Business.

Again, we have much to do this spring term, but we are off to a good start!  Please take the time to read about the many wonderful achievements of our College that are highlighted in this month's newsletter.
