Babita Gupta and Christina Zhang

Dr. Babita Gupta, Ph.D. (L) and Dr. Christina Zhang, Ph.D. (R)

March 31, 2023

College of Business faculty Babita Gupta and Christina Zhang delivered a presentation at the AACSB Innovative Curriculum Conference held on March 20, 2023,  based on the work done at the College of Business. Sixty-five conference participants from universities across the globe attended the 30-minute presentation by Babita Gupta on "Using Student Voice to Improve the Quality of the Program." Many thought-provoking questions and comments were submitted and will be brought to the Committee on Curriculum and Assurance of Learning (C2AoL) for further analysis. C2AoL subcommittees will use this analysis as part of the "closing-the-loop" activities when examining student feedback in fall 2023.

The conference was held virtually and was produced by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a non-profit association that accredits the best business schools in the world. CSUMB's College of Business is a member of AACSB International and is undergoing the process of becoming AACSB accredited.

Dr. Gupta is a professor of information systems and lead faculty for the information systems concentration within the Bachelor of Science Business Administration (BSBA) degree program. She is also the director of AACSB Accreditation for the College of Business, co-chair of the Strategic Planning and Accreditation Committee (SPAC), and a member of the Committee for Curriculum and Assurance of Learning (C2AOL).

Dr. Zhang is an associate professor of finance in the BSBA degree program and serves as co-chair of C2AOL and as a member of SPAC.

Both Dr. Gupta and Dr. Zhang teach in the College of Business Online MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree program as well.

In their presentation titled "Using Student Voice to Improve the Quality of the Program," Dr. Gupta and Dr. Zhang shared "best practices for utilizing the ‘student voice’ as a meaningful indirect measure for data-driven continuous improvement."

The presentation began by outlining the process of developing a student survey in a SPAC subcommittee made up of College of Business faculty. After determining the various types and categories of information to be collected and drafting questions with input from stakeholders, the first survey was administered to graduating seniors in Capstone classes in spring of 2019.

Questions were designed to solicit students' feedback in multiple areas of their academic experience at CSUMB's College of Business, such as the quality and value of the curriculum, career counseling and placement services, scholarships and financial assistance, and overall student satisfaction. Other questions gathered data to facilitate employment analysis by gender, first generation status, major, and concentration.

There were also open-ended questions designed to collect student feedback to help improve the College's curriculum and co-curricular programs. This feedback is delivered to committees and program coordinators within the College for Business, where "Closing-the-loop Actions" for improvements are developed and implemented.

This will be the fifth year the survey has been administered, and the completion rate of the survey is close to 100%. The survey has proved instrumental in meeting the College's goal of collecting student feedback to make curriculum and learning improvements. This not only allows the College of Business to serve student needs better but will also help the College meet AACSB accreditation requirements.
