Communication Across the Disciplines

Shared Criteria

CAD embraces oral communication and writing assessment as part of effective pedagogy. We also recognize that information literacy and critical thinking are involved whenever students engage in formal communication; therefore, we recommend drawing from the integrated rubrics developed through work with the Institutional Learning Outcomes scholars. These are available at https://csumb.edu/tla/intellectual-skills-guides-and-rubrics. The scholars developed integrated rubrics for oral communication and written communication, including assignment guides and rubric guides (which describe the elements on the rubric in greater detail).

Every CSU institution (not just CSUMB) must administer an assessment of writing for its upper-division students. Statewide, this is referred to as the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement, aka the "GWAR."

For more information, see the Area A General Education Requirements.
