23rd Annual Social Justice Colloquium Topic: Iran and Iranian Women

2019 Events

This year's Social Justice Colloquium is a collaboration between the International Programs Office and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

The topic of the 2019 Social Justice Colloquium will be on the country of Iran and Iranian women. This event will link a wide range of academic programs in exploring the influence of filmmaking and documentaries in social justice movements in Iranian society.

There will be two weeks of free events between April 8-18, 2019, which will be open the the campus and Monterey Bay Area community. The RSVP form includes all events-join us for as many as you wish. {edit-RSVP form disabled following events}

Keynote address by internationally acclaimed Iranian film director, Rakhshan Banietemad

About the Artist:  Rakhshan Banietemad

Mrs. Rakhshan Banietemad is an internationally acclaimed film director who has been called the “First lady of Iranian cinema” for three decades. Mrs. Rakhshan Banietemad has sketched the most striking portraits of life, specifically; women’s life in Iran- seen mostly through the eyes of the least privileged and unheard. Her oeuvre is brave in its study of human resistance under the ever-challenging social condition.

Banietemad’s documentaries shed light on pressing issues in Iran, such as women’s prisons, AIDS, addiction, and poverty. Banietemad has won many international awards for her films and documentaries:

  • Best Screenplay Award from the Venice Film Festival (Italy, 2015)
  • Audience Award from “Tales” from Gene Siskel Film Center (USA, 2015)
  • Cinema Hooray Award, Crime and Punishment Film Festival (Turkey, 2016)
  • Ethics and Prayer Awards for social and civilian activities (Iran, 2016)
  • Best Screenplay Award from the Venice Film Festival (Italy, 2015)

Save the date! The Visual & Public Art Department Spring Visiting Artist Series welcomes Sahar Khoury in conjunction with the 2019 Social Justice Colloquium.

About the Artist: Sahar Khoury is an artist based in Oakland, California. Khoury works mostly with found or rejected materials to produce sculptures and installations. Her constructions are made of a combination of paper/textile mache, concrete, ceramic, steel and silk-screened materials. She received her BA in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz in 1996 and her MFA From UC Berkeley in 2013. Recently, Khoury’s work has been exhibited at The Oakland Museum of California, The Wattis Institute, UC Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, and CANADA (NY). She has also been invited to participate in the 2018 Triennial Exhibition, Bay Area Now 8 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Khoury’s work has been written about in numerous publications, including Art Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, KQED Arts and Vulture Magazine.
