Advisor Risk Management
There will always be risk associated with student organization events and activities. Because of this, it is always important for organization advisors to understand the best ways to analyze and interpret risk associated with certain events. Follow these steps to engage in that process:
- Identify the risk: "What are the potential risks related to this activity/event?"
- Analyze the risk: "What is the likelihood of this risk occurring?"
- Evaluate the risk: "What would the impact of this risk be?
- Treat the risk: "What are ways to prevent loss before it occurs?" "What are ways to reduce loss should potential risks occur?"
- Monitor the risk: "What is our action plan for responding to this potential risk should it occur?"
At the end of the day, your role is to be the prudent person who provides common sense counsel to the organization. Your top priority should be the people--will the people be okay?
- Use this matrix to help you analyze and evaluate the risks associated with an event/activity
Treating risk should always include more than one approach. Consider what different avenues you can take to manage and monitor the risk before, during, and after the activity/event. Here are some basic responses to managing risk:
- Avoid
- Mitigate
- Transfer
- Accept
