Brand and Visual Identity

Photography

It’s important to show, not just tell — and our imagery does just that, encapsulating our CSUMB Otter Raft spirit from all angles. Photos should feature engaged individuals and/or dynamic movement with a light and natural feel showing that our students, faculty and staff are actively achieving academic and career goals.

Photographic style

Wide - Leave space

Wide photography should feature our campus and the beautiful Monterey Bay area. Interior photographs should be unique to CSUMB, showing individuals or groups of people interacting with their surroundings, ultimately selling what’s special about CSUMB. Photographs outdoors should always show our landscape and weather. Farm fields or the beach, fog or sun — show it off! It’s what makes us unique. Remember to always include negative space for designers to place graphics or type for stories and advertising.

Detail - Move in close

Don’t forget the details! Sometimes you need to get up close to tell a story. With detailed shots, showcase people engaging with the subject. Photograph people and things active and in motion. Whenever possible, also take photos from far away that will help tell more of the story.

Portraits - Showcase their environment

Portraits of individuals or groups should show the subjects actively engaged in their environment or with one another.
