Parent FAQ
We know you have questions and concerns about your student's health and well-being on campus, so we've compiled answers to the most common questions we hear from parents. If you don't see an answer to your question(s) here, please contact the Campus Health Center at (831) 582-3965.
Yes. Encourage your student to get a flu shot. Also encourage your student to wash their hands frequently, stay away from people who are sick, and take other preventative measures to stay healthy.
The Campus Health Center stocks flu vaccinations during flu season, and encourages students, staff, and faculty to call (831) 582-3965 for pricing and availability.
The Monterey County Health Department also offers free influenza vaccination clinics for individuals six months of age and older. Other locations offering influenza vaccines can be found at: vaccinefinder.org.
Students who are not feeling well should call the Campus Health Center at 831-582-3965. We will ask a few questions to evaluate their symptoms and determine the appropriate treatment. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, we might:
- Advise them to stay in their room. They should notify their professors that they will be absent as well as notify their resident advisor of their illness. We recommend students ask a buddy to check on them periodically and bring meals, homework assignments, etc.
- Seek immediate treatment. If we feel the illness is severe, we will advise the student to seek emergency medical treatment.
The occasional sick roommate is a fact of campus life. Students should stay away from their sick roommate as much as possible and practice good hygiene and other preventative measures such as keeping their room clean and not sharing food and drink.
Students should remain in their rooms until 24 hours after their fever has gone away without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol.
Students with medical conditions need to take special care to prevent illness. They should take precautions, such as getting COVID-19 and seasonal flu shots, and have a specialist in the area who can treat their condition. If a student with a medical condition doesn't feel well, they should contact the Campus Health Center at (831) 582-3965.
