About Information Technology
Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is Cybersecurity Awareness month at CSUMB. We use this month to teach our students, staff and faculty that every Otter has a role to play when it comes to being cyber smart and cyber safe.
It's a year round battle to be cyber smart. And it doesn't stop at school or the office; these are skills to make you cyber safe at home, too!
Otter Thursdays
Test your knowledge to win a different cybersecurity hero button each Otter Thursday during October 2023. Each button qualifies you to win a Starbucks Gift Card. We will be dropping hints to win on our Instagram!
Webinars
The Chancellor's Office is sponsoring a series of webinars around cybersecurity.
National Campaign
Since 2004, government and industry have collaborated every October to "ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online."
Training
Our annual Data Security and FERPA training for all CSUMB employees takes place during October. Check your email for training notifications and be cyber safe by refreshing your knowledge!

Phishing
CSUMB plans quarterly simulated phishing campaigns starting in October. Using Phishme from Cofense, we send a spoof-phishing email to the campus as a test. Watch for the advance notification and see if you can spot the phish!
Authentication
With multi-factor authentication (MFA), you two or more pieces of evidence to verify your identity to gain access to an app or digital resource. MFA protects against hackers by ensuring that digital users are who they say they are. At CSUMB we suggest you use Okta Verify.

Data Loss Prevention
Users are the front line for protecting themselves and the campus from threats. Whenever possible, no SSN or credit card data should be stored outside the system of record. Below are some links to new resources for Staff and Faculty to self-assess their computers and data storage environments, and help locate and protect sensitive data.
