Monterey Bay Justice Project

Justice Project students create PSA for Radio Bilingüe

Justice Project students Wes McCamey and Samantha Calderon (seated) work with Jesus Ramirez to record the PSA.

Students with the Monterey Bay Justice Project wrote and recorded a public service announcement (PSA) for the Spanish-speaking community of north Monterey County about how to obtain a court interpreter. The PSA will air on Radio Bilingüe 90.9 FM in Salinas.

The PSA was developed as part of a semester-long project in which the students Pamela Martinez, Wesley McCamey, Samantha Calderon and Nick Giordano explored multiple issues related to court interpretation. McCamey and Calderon, both Salinas natives, provided the voices for the final product.

“The content is of great benefit for our audience,” said Jesus Ramirez, producer and youth radio coordinator at the station.

The Justice Project plans to continue to work with the station to find ways to deliver information about the criminal justice systems and related issues to the Spanish-language community of the area.

You can hear the PSA by following the Monterey Bay Justice Project on Soundcloud. This version features the voices of McCamey and Martinez. For a transcript of the PSA, email justiceproject@csumb.edu.
