Information Literacy Tutorials

Information literacy level two tutorials (Area B3: Life Science)

Tutorial 3 (Life Science) - This tutorial will introduce you to the scientific peer review process and how it contributes to the reliability of scientific knowledge. You will also learn to recognize the structure of typical scholarly scientific articles.

IL Outcomes

Evaluate the credibility of information sources, using the following criteria: role of peer-review, quality of evidence, expertise and credentials, purpose and audience, point of view

Effectively search for and identify peer-reviewed articles on the topic

Tutorial 4 (Life Science) - This tutorial will help you learn how to search for and retrieve relevant, peer-reviewed sources on a research topic. You will learn to choose relevant library databases and combine keywords and synonyms to develop a search strategy. You will evaluate information sources using several important criteria to help you establish the credibility of the source and its author(s).

Select library databases appropriate to the topic

Identify and combine keywords and searches to develop a search strategy; effectively execute the search in appropriate library databases

Tutorial 3 (U.S. History) - This tutorial will introduce you to the peer review process and how it contributes to the reliability of knowledge. You will also learn to recognize the structure of typical scholarly journal articles and learn to distinguish between primary historical evidence and secondary historical sources.

Develop a strategy to conduct scholarly research on a historical topic or question

Demonstrate an understanding of the distinctions between primary historical evidence and secondary historical sources
