The 2023 CSU Summer Arts program, which is open to anyone interested in mastering a creative craft, is now accepting applications. The immersive experiences allow students – who may be CSU, UC, private college, community college, or other non-university community members – a chance to learn by doing their art in short, two-week-long courses throughout the summer. This year, classes are offered at Fresno State, and in London, Italy, and Spain.

“The intensive environment accelerates the creative process and helps students master their craft while fostering lifelong friendships and professional relationships that will help them in the future,” said Ray Smith, CSU Summer Arts director, in an announcement from the Chancellor’s Office.

Started in 1985 as a humble dance program on the CSU Long Beach campus, the program has since expanded locations and has come to include all manner of performative, literary and visual art mediums.

In this year’s version, there will be two sessions at Fresno State from June 26 to July 9 and July 10 to July 23. There is an additional three-week option abroad in London (July 11 to Aug. 1) and Spain (July 20 to Aug. 10). Students can participate in both weeks of the sessions. The application deadline for courses in Italy has passed.

There is a diverse range of courses being offered. At Fresno State, students can learn the latest moves in K-Pop, learn to play and dance to African drums, build worlds with digital tools, or try their hands at novel writing. Meanwhile, in London, actors can fine-tune their British accents, while musicians can master the nuances of the Spanish guitar in Spain.

Costs range from $1,700 to $4,500, depending on the number of units, California state residency status, and degree level. Applicants should also factor in the cost of living and travel, which is not included. Scholarships covering the full or partial cost of the program are also available.

The application deadline for most classes is May 22. Find applications and more information at the Summer Arts website.
