On Saturday, Sept. 9, longtime librarian, teacher, civic leader and civil rights activist Helen Rucker’s birthday was celebrated on campus at her namesake Helen Rucker Center for Black Excellence. 

“Helen's birthday was a warm and joyous occasion filled with gratitude and care,” said Vanessa Lopez-Littleton, CSUMB’s interim dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services. “The highlight of the evening was witnessing the community showering Helen with words of appreciation.”

About 30-40 people were in attendance, including CSUMB President Vanya Quiñones, Chief Diversity Officer Brian Corpening, Monterey Mayor Tyller Williamson, Seaside Mayor Ian Oglesby, local activist and leader Ruthie Watts, Rucker’s family and friends, and more.  

Rucker flipped the script, though, by giving a gift instead of receiving — donating $10,000 to the center, which is poised to host cultural activities, connect to neighboring communities, promote the inclusion of African heritage students, faculty and staff, and more. 

"I enjoyed celebrating with Helen Rucker and community members on her birthday," said Quiñones. "She has always been such a strong advocate for equity and for our diverse students. Her recent gift to the university ensures we will continue to create supportive and welcoming spaces for Black students at CSUMB."

Prior to the birthday celebration, it was announced that the physical home of the center would be the Student Center (building 12, room 120), and CSUMB Yhashika Lee and Angela Maggott were named co-directors. 

Lopez-Littleton said that Rucker’s son made a surprise visit that made her beam with joy; while the attendees left with something too.
