The students from Assistant Professor Althea SullyCole's Music Production and Artistic Development class are putting on a free, family-friendly performance, which is open to the public, 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in the Music Hall. 

"A Musical Melting Pot: Songs of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" will consist of original and covered material performed by seven of the students. Attendees can expect a range of styles, including jazz, pop, rock and electronic music, as composed and interpreted by the students.  

At the beginning of the semester, SullyCole invited the students to reflect on their dreams as musicians and how they could progress toward them. 

"Students were particularly interested in developing original material and their musicianship," SullyCole said. "Every student is performing on more than one instrument over the course of the concert."

The instrumentation will include vibraphone, piano, guitar, drums, bass, glockenspiel, harp, marimba, percussion, and kora. There will be mixes of live and pre-recorded music. 

Some of the cover songs will include Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," Bôa's "Duvet" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Girl from Ipanema." 

There is no intermission, but there will be time before and after the performance to mingle and talk with the musicians.
