Local vendors and student groups filled the ballroom of the Otter Student Union on Thursday, Dec. 7, for the first-ever Cal State Monterey Bay Winter Night Market.

Hundreds of people wound their way through rows of tables and displays filled with crafts, artwork and specialty products geared toward holiday giving. Those entering the OSU were able to pass under a canopy of lights and snowflakes. A few patrons braved a light drizzle to check out a handful of tented tables outside, where an inflatable snowman added to the festive decorations. There was free hot chocolate to warm those feeling the chill of the weather. 

Mary Jo Zenk, program manager for the Institute of Innovation and Economic Development, said her organization helped encourage local companies it has worked with – many of which have participated in the iiED’s Startup program – to participate.

“This way, we were able to have a lot more vendors,” Zenk said. 

Lavender Creek was one of those vendors, offering lavender hand cream and pre-moistened refreshment towels, among other things. Owner Ryan Hopkins said he participated in the iiED Startup two years ago.  

“We like to network and stay connected with the university and the iiED program,” Hopkins said in between showing his products to customers.

Olivia Sanchez, owner of Chezza Jewelry, said she was happy for the opportunity to add another market to her December list. 

“During the holidays, I do a ton of markets,” Sanchez said. “This is one of nine I’ll do this month.”

Mia Corona, a third-year Humanities and Communication major, said she came looking for potential Christmas gifts and ended up buying a necklace for herself. 

“There are a lot of cool vendors here,” she said, “and it’s a good break from studying for finals.”
