As part of Black History Month, Cal State Monterey Bay’s College of Health Sciences and Human Services will welcome Dr. Shekinah Fashaw-Walters, assistant professor of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, for a talk on racial inequities in healthcare at 4:45 p.m Thursday, Feb. 22. The event is part of the Diversity Celebration Series.

A graduate of Brown University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the University of Central Florida, Fashaw-Walters envisions a society where the strength, autonomy, dignity and independence of all older adults are enhanced by policies and practices that promote healthy and equitable aging. 

To get there, she said, “There is much work to be done.” 

Providing quality care for all means dismantling structural inequities and providing equitable high-quality care for the most marginalized, she said. As a health services researcher, Fashaw-Walters investigates the inequities in aging while elucidating and explicitly naming racism as a fundamental determinant of health inequities within long-term care. This event will examine how to change traditional  thinking to better serve communities of color.

The event, in the Otter Student Union Ballroom, begins with a reception. Fashaw-Walters’ talk begins at 5:30 and will be also be streamed to Zoom. RSVP to attend.
