University Corporation receives Blue Zone designation
February 13, 2024
Cal State Monterey Bay’s University Corporation is feeling a little blue these days. But in a good way.
The corporation has been certified as a Blue Zones Project-approved worksite for its attention to employee well-being.
According to the Blue Zones Project website, its programs “are designed to inspire, encourage, and promote well-being within your organization so your employees, members, and customers are more socially connected and equipped to positively impact one another and the entire community.”
In applying for the designation, University Corporation promoted such things as ergonomic and flexible work stations, along with providing workers with quiet spaces, nursing areas and casual dress days.
Maddison Burton, director of Human Resources and Payroll, said the lengthy application for being a Blue Zone started during the Covid pandemic.
“We believe it’s really important,” she said of the dappresignation. “Not only does it separate us from other employers, it shows our employees that we put a healthy environment as a high priority.”
To be approved, applicants must score 78 points or higher out of 117 possible points. UCorp scored 89.
“I am impressed by UCorp’s commitment to employee wellbeing,” said Larisa Sheparovich, the organization lead for schools and worksites at Blue Zones Project Monterey County. “It has been an incredible privilege to partner and support with implementing researched best practices that help to make the healthy choice the easy choice.”
