This message was sent to all students, faculty, and staff on Thursday, March 12 ,2020.

As you know, the university is working closely with public health officials to assess the evolving situation with COVID-19. I commend the work of our excellent faculty and staff. Their efforts to support our students have prepared us to operate the university under any conditions, including delivering classes in alternate modalities.

Although the Monterey County Health Department reports there are no cases of community-spread COVID-19 in the county, we must consider new information and advice. In light of Governor Newsom’s announcement and additional information related to potential cases in our county, now is the time to act.

Separate detailed communications to students, faculty, and staff are forthcoming. Below is a summary of the changes.

CSUMB is implementing the following instructional changes:

• March 13–19 | All classes are suspended. University faculty and staff will use these days to prepare for transition to an alternate modality for instruction and services.
• March 20 – April 24 | All lecture and discussion courses operate on alternate instructional delivery, including virtual classroom meetings.
  • Lab and studio courses may continue to meet in person as necessary.
  • Each instructor will contact students with information about the class delivery method.

University event cancellations, March 13 – April 24:

• All campus visits and tours.
• University-sponsored attendance at any off-campus event of 250 participants or more.
• All on-campus events of more than 50 participants.
• Any on-campus events of less than 50 participants requires the prior approval of the appropriate university vice-president.

Most campus services will remain operational, including housing, computer labs, food service, counseling services, and other aspects of university life. Continue standard preventive practices to minimize the potential spread of the infection. For everyone’s safety, if you are ill or symptomatic, do not come to work or class.

By April 15, we will assess the situation, including plans for commencement, and communicate our next steps. We will continue to communicate any changes in the situation and when we have more information available.
