In November 2022, CSU Northridge announced 17 finalists for the newest CSU Hispanic Serving Institution Initiative. The grant, Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub at CSUN, in which  CSUN partnered with Apple Computers, totals over $2 million to advance educational opportunities for HSIs within the CSU system. 

One of the winning applications came from CSUMB’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC), which proposed helping STEM students each semester through mentored independent research and the creation of a professional online portfolio.

UROC was awarded $150,000, which will fund approximately 10 CSUMB students studying STEM each semester through Fall 2023. The first cohort of 11 students was chosen at the beginning of February.

The scholars will receive tailored mentorship for their research interests through UROC’s Researchers Program, enhancing their curiosities through research and the help of CSUMB's award-winning faculty and Apple products. 

"It's a really important resource that will help develop their careers," said UROC’s associate director of educational research, Rogers Walker.

Each cohort will also receive a step-by-step tutorial on building its own online portfolios, allowing CSUMB’s brightest STEM scholars to showcase their professional and academic achievements. 

"An e-portfolio or website will help students find a place for their CVs and accomplishments in order for them to be more competitive for grad schools and their careers," Walker said.

A month into the program, Walker reported that excitement was already showing. One computer science major stands out to him: "He's really excited to use Apple's iOS [Apple's operating system]," he said.

While the first cohort has already been chosen, there are still two more chances to apply as an Apple Scholar. Deadlines and application details will be regularly listed on UROC’s Researcher Application page.

Walker said they hope to continue the university’s mission as an HSI and are looking for diverse applicants "in all fields of STEM."
