CSUMB recruits Black and African heritage students this Super Saturday

The California State University system has, for 17 years now, sent campus officials to Black churches throughout the state in an effort to recruit young Black students to join the CSU. It’s called Super Sunday.
Two things distinguish CSUMB’s same effort: It’s Super Saturday (instead of Sunday), and as of 2018, it takes place on campus. The next one is from 8:30 a.m. - noon this Saturday, March 18, at University Center. It’s free to attend.
It’s one effort among a suite of enterprises to recruit Black students to CSUMB, which has been steadily losing that population in recent years.
“This event brings the Black community together to engage Black youth and to create a connection between CSUMB and the broader campus community,” says Vanessa Lopez-Littleton, professor and chair of Health, Human Services and Public Policy. “We remain committed to creating a culture and climate that welcomes and honors Black students.”
She cites the establishment of the Helen Rucker Center for Black Excellence, and faculty and staff members who serve, support, teach and nurture students.
Lopez-Littleton addresses young people’s broader conversation and re-evaluation of the merits of higher education.
“Education is about liberation and freedom,” she says. “The value of education cannot be overstated in a democracy that places value on and gives responsibility to an educated citizenry. Education is not merely about setting yourself up for career opportunities, but to open you up to the full range of human capabilities.”
President Vanya Quiñones will open the event with a welcome speech, followed by a special guest speaker; a discussion of campus support programs; a community forum about the kindergarten to university education pathway; and a student panel discussion.
Participants are invited to apply for a $1,000 scholarship upon enrollment at CSUMB. The event will conclude with a campus tour, so walking shoes are encouraged. Register online.
