Disqualification and Reinstatement

Academic disqualification occurs when a student fails to meet standards for academic performance and progress and they are  involuntarily separated from the University. Generally, this means that a student on academic probation has fallen below the grade point average required for their academic level. Once disqualified, students are no longer eligible to enroll at CSUMB and a hold is placed on their record. Any student that has been disqualified shall be notified by the University of the disqualification and of the right to appeal his/her standing at the University.

Disqualification Appeals

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students who have been academically disqualified will be notified by the University, generally via CSUMB email.

Undergraduate students who are academically disqualified may submit an appeal if they have extenuating circumstances surrounding their disqualification. Appeals must demonstrate exceptional, documented circumstances or errors on part of the university. A successful appeal of disqualification will result in the student remaining eligible to enroll, and their academic probation will be continued. Procedures and deadlines to appeal the academic disqualification will be detailed in the University notification and on the Center for Student Success webpage.

Graduate & Credential Students

Graduate & Credential students who have been academically disqualified will be notified by the University, generally via CSUMB email.

Graduate & Credential students who are academically disqualified may submit an appeal if they have extenuating circumstances surrounding their disqualification. Appeals must demonstrate exceptional, documented circumstances or errors on part of the university. A successful appeal of disqualification will result in the student remaining eligible to enroll, and their academic probation will be continued. Procedures and deadlines to appeal the academic disqualification will be detailed in the University notification and on the Office of Graduate Studies webpage. 

Appeals deadlines must be met even if the student does not intend to return to CSUMB that term. Students who do not attend the first term after reinstatement need to discuss the need for a Leave of Absence request after reinstatement; otherwise, the student may have to reapply to the program.

Reinstatement from disqualification

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students who choose not to immediately appeal their academic disqualification (or who appeal and are denied) may petition for reinstatement to CSUMB if they meet the criteria for reinstatement. In order to re-enroll at CSUMB, undergraduate students must submit a new admissions application to CSUMB and must meet specific criteria and timelines. Generally, this requires being absent from CSUMB for at least least one academic year (i.e. two regular semesters) since the disqualification. Graduate & Credential Students

Graduate and credential students who do not immediately appeal their academic disqualification may petition for reinstatement to CSUMB and their program after at least one academic year (i.e. two regular semesters) has passed since the disqualification. Readmission and reinstatement procedures for graduate students can be found on the Office of Admissions webpage.
