Classes and Planning

How to repeat a class you've already taken

Undergraduate students may attempt to improve their GPA by repeating a class in which they have earned a grade of C-, D+, D, D-, F, WU or IC. Only classes repeated at CSUMB may be used to adjust the GPA, and no adjustments will be made once a student has been awarded a degree.

Limits apply to individual class and overall units that can be repeated. Enrollment in repeated coursework beyond these limits requires approval. Units used and units available for repeats can be verified in OASIS Student Center.

  • Undergraduate students may only repeat a class one time. Students wishing to repeat a class more than once must submit the Undergraduate Repeat Petition form.
  • Undergraduate students cannot repeat a class in which a grade of "C" or higher has been assigned. Students wishing to repeat a class they have successfully passed must submit the Undergraduate Repeat Petition form.
  • Undergraduate students are limited to repeating 28 semester units during their career at CSUMB. 16 of these units may be assigned grade forgiveness, while the remaining 12 units will be averaged into the GPA. Students wishing to exceed their overall repeat limit must submit the Undergraduate Repeat Petition form.

This form is used by undergraduate students to request to repeat a course for grade point average (GPA) adjustment and to request to exceed total repeat limits. Approval from advisor is required. Additional approvals vary based on request type, but will include Department Chair and/or the Dean of University College. Completed form is submitted to the Office of the Registrar.

Graduate and credential-seeking students

Graduate and credential-seeking students may only repeat for GPA adjustment a class in which a grade of B- or lower was assigned. When a class is repeated all grades count toward the GPA and grade forgiveness will not be granted.

See the Academic Standing Policy for more details about repeating courses.
