How to update your residency status

Residency status determines if a student pays tuition on an in-state or out-of-state basis. Establishing resident status requires a combination of physical presence and intent to remain indefinitely.

New Students

Residency status for new students is determined by the information provided in your application for admission. Initial residency status is established by the Office of Admissions. For more information, please visit Determining California State Residency

Updating Residency Status

If you are a CURRENTLY ENROLLED student who has attended CSUMB for at least one semester and are classified as a non-resident, you may apply for reclassification. A CSU Residence Questionnaire including questions concerning physical presence, intent, and financial independence must be completed and submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
