QT LGBTQ+ Community Teach-In
Staff and faculty who participate in the 6-hour QT LGBTQ+ Community Teach-In, formerly Safe Zone training, will be able to:
- Identify campus, community, and national resources for LGBTQ+ students.
- Gain a basic understanding of issues related to the LGBTQ+ community, including terminology, history, current events, and identity development theory.
- Develop and practice skills to support LGBTQ+ students.
- Increase self-efficacy in being able to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.
What is Safe Zone?
Currently, we’ve recently changed from the name Safe Zone to QT LGBTQ+ Community Teach-In to better reflect the experience that we are able to provide, as this experience will not be providing a Safe Zone Project Session. We aim to facilitate a session where community members can bring forth their knowledge to teach each other on topics related to QT LGBTQ+ experiences.
To better identify, support, educate, and learn about LGBTQ+-related topics in the campus community in hopes of making CSUMB a more welcoming and rewarding environment for all community members. Anyone who chooses to participate in the program will receive an QT LGBTQ+ Community Teach-In placard or sticker that they will be encouraged to display so that QT LGBTQ+ folk will know that there is someone they can reach out to on campus.
Our hope and intention are that safe space will grow into a brave space where all community members throughout our campus feel that their unique experiences are seen and acknowledged. The default assumption will be that “it is safe to express exactly who I am and all that I am wherever I am.” The Otter Cross Cultural Center has been long standing advocates to support and host the QT LGBTQ+ Community Teach-In. It is exciting to share resources and build community in support of our QT LGBTQ+ community members.
Program Objectives
