As a human performance technology (HPT) consultant, Russ has been designing, developing and facilitating training programs and other performance improvement interventions (e.g., workshops, job aids, change management initiatives, games, etc.) for over 20 years. He’s led project teams for multi-national organizations, startups, and government organizations, and performed the bulk of this work in the instructional systems design (ISD) space.

When not teaching for CSUMB, he runs Russ Powell Consulting, Inc., an organizational development (OD) consulting firm that specializes in the development of leaders and teams. Ask him about the workshop Leadership and the Middle Path.
In the world of ISD, Russ is known for his expertise in the design and development of highly interactive, learner-centric programs and performance support tools that include ample amounts of both style and substance (i.e., they look great, function well and deliver results). Over the course of his career, he has worked with Roche, Genentech, SAP, Delta Air Lines, Hilton Worldwide, Sun Microsystems, Google, the United States Coast Guard, Pixar, and NASA Space Flight Center. He has received outstanding achievement awards for his learning programs including multiple awards of excellence from Brandon Hall Research and the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).
Russ holds certifications from the training organizations Middle Path Consulting, Development Dimensions International and Blessing/White, and two degrees in the behavioral sciences from Georgia State University and Loyola University New Orleans. He’s an avid musician, juggler and flier of stunt kites. He lives in Northern California.
