Ernest (Ernie) Stromberg

I have been employed as a professor of Rhetoric and Communication at CSUMB for twenty years. I have taught many sections of HCOM 317S and have loved teaching service learning and forming relationships with community partners. I grew up in "extreme" northern California and attended Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). My Ph.D. is in English, and my dissertation focuses on American Indigenous literature. I teach courses in cooperative argumentation, written communication, and literary studies. I enjoy hiking, backpacking, camping, and practicing the Japanese martial art, Aikido — the way of harmony. I am the father of twin daughters who keep me on my toes.

Social Justice Interest Areas / Social Justice Concerns:
I am deeply concerned about racial injustice, and much of what motivates my interest and scholarship in Indigenous studies is the desire to amplify Native voices and concerns to and address historic and ongoing legacies of settler colonialism. I see the issues such as militarism, mass incarceration, racism, sexism, homophobia, and economic inequality as intertwined.

My publications and academic presentations have covered areas of Indigenous studies, composition studies, and popular culture. I have a book forthcoming this year on trauma-informed pedagogies for higher education.
