Service Learning Institute

At the beginning of the semester, some of our community partners joined our Virtual Partner Fair to recruit students to their opportunities.  Each partner had 30 seconds to introduce their organization and the opportunities they currently have open.  Here is the link to view the recording:

CSUMB has a community partnership database with hundreds of non-profit organizations and governmental agencies that are established service learning community partners. The links below take you to lists of the partners that have identified specific service opportunities for the current semester. Review their service needs and connect with the partners according to the “Opportunity Application Instructions” at the bottom of each opportunity posting:

  • Connect with CSUMB University Police to schedule an appointment for Fingerprinting. The Service Learning Institute will be charged and students will not need to pay out of pocket.

CSUMB has an extensive network of K-12 partner districts and schools ready for your service. Some Districts have pre-identified service opportunities and specific district and/or school liaisons to support you in arranging your service placement. Other Districts welcome your service but require you to reach out individually to make the arrangements. All listed K-12 Districts are current service learning partners and are technically able to host CSUMB service learning students.

One-Time Service Learning Requests are designed to accommodate students who: 

• live outside the area and have identified an appropriate organization closer to home.  
• have an existing relationship with a relevant organization for which a comparable opportunity does not already exist in the database.
• have secured a unique opportunity that does not exist in the database with an existing community partner.

Students will need to:

1. Ensure the organization and/or opportunity:
   • aligns with the definition of service as “community and civic engagement oriented toward creating a more just and humane society”, 
   • is with “external (to CSUMB) human communities” and builds a reciprocal relationship, and
   • meets course expectations.
2. Provide the following information to your course professor:

• • Student’s name and CSUMB email address
  • Name of organization
  • Organization’s website (not required)
  • Site Supervisor name and email address
  • Brief description of service activities
  • Location Type (in-person, hybrid, remote)
