Reading Apprenticeship at CSUMB

Limited to CSUMB faculty (part- and full-time lecturers and tenure line)

Let us know if you are interested in taking a Reading Apprenticeship 6-week, asynchronous online course offered through WestEd. Limited to CSUMB faculty. We will accommodate interested faculty if funds are available.

Reading Apprenticeship Communities of Practice

Facilitated by faculty trained in Reading Apprenticeship, Communities of Practice meet 4 - 5 times over the semester to provide camaraderie and real-time support for faculty who want to improve their expertise in using Reading Apprenticeship to improve student learning. Faculty teaching courses at any level and in any discipline are welcome. Participants are expected to implement Reading Apprenticeship routines and strategies in their Spring 2020 classes and must have prior exposure to Reading Apprenticeship (e.g. participation in the Fall 2019 Introduction to Reading Apprenticeship Planning Week workshop describe above).

About Reading Apprenticeship

Reading Apprenticeship instructional routines and approaches are based on a framework that describes the classroom in terms of four interacting dimensions: Social, Personal, Cognitive, and Knowledge-Building. Those routines have been used extensively in community colleges and increasingly in four-year universities. The Reading Apprenticeship framework draws on the strengths students and faculty bring to build confidence and power to their work with texts, concepts, and each other. With a focus on apprenticing students into the problem-solving strategies of disciplines, Reading Apprenticeship helps students master core concepts and helps instructors explicitly support academic literacy in their discipline.

What CSUMB students have to say about Reading Apprenticeship

What CSUMB faculty have to say about Reading Apprenticeship

Nelson Graff, CSUMB Communication Across the Disciplines Director

“One of the advantages of Reading Apprenticeship and metacognitive conversation is that students learn strategic thinking and problem-solving from each other.”

Ryne Leuzinger, CSUMB Research and Instruction Librarian

“Reading Apprenticeship provides a flexible model that can be useful for supporting student engagement with a wide variety of course texts and across disciplines, from FYS to capstone, humanities to STEM.”

Danielle Burchett, CSUMB Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology

"Reading Apprenticeship allows instructors to model how we struggle in our comprehension of written material, demonstrating that it's fine to feel confused and how we get through challenging texts."

Swarup Wood, CSUMB SNS Professor and FYS Coordinator

“I loved the way Reading Apprenticeship pulled implicit strategies for interrogating disciplinary reading out of the faculty at the workshop, and it made them explicitly available to use with our students.”

Lesley Stampleman, Cooperative Learning Center

"When I introduce Reading Apprenticeship to peer tutors, their feedback reflects renewed interest in a reading strategies toolbox that enables all students to do college-level work."

Rebecca Kersnar, CSUMB SNS Lecturer and TLA Faculty Associate

“Each time I go to a classroom and try this out, students are so engaged in the content and their thinking.”

Tori Derr, CSUMB SNS Assistant Professor

“Reading Apprenticeship empowered my students to reflect on and advance their personal strategies for reading within their discipline. Many students were excited by the utility of this approach. I’m looking forward to taking the upcoming RA intensive!”
