    Program summary:

    After unexpected and challenging shifts between in-person learning and online learning, this workshop will emphasize mindfully replenishing motivational fuel for teachers and students. How can teachers promote a sense of belonging in their classrooms? Participants will gain and share strategies with fellow teachers to strengthen our professional learning networks. They also build positive communities with students through language learning and SEL, and develop effective feedback protocols toward developing proficiency through communicative tasks in the WL classroom.

  • Inspiring Social Justice and Advocacy in Spanish Heritage Speakers

    As the situation for many students is returning to a new “normal,” the opportunity has emerged to re-examine what we, as a society, must fight to change and what we must work to bring back. In this three day workshop, participants will explore the use of literature and media as tools for social justice, with an overall focus on Culturally Responsive, Relevant, and Sustaining Pedagogy. Attendees will receive resources to inspire unit design with this approach in mind, including student samples, teaching strategies, and authentic texts. Participants will also be encouraged to collaborate and exchange additional resources as a community of teachers and learners on this ongoing journey.

  • Learning Forward with Effective Feedback in World Language Classroom

    Program Description
    Giving letters and numbers is not feedback and does not motivate our language learners, while a lack of feedback creates setbacks and frustrations. How can feedback promote learners' engagement and independence? Participants gain practical ways to provide effective feedback so that students can take ownership of their own learning.

    Program Summary

    Designated ELD Workshop: From the foundations to the actual doing, this three-session online workshop guides participants through the basic concepts of designated ELD (ELD standards, ELA-ELD framework, functional language) and moves into making language activities work for Emergent Bilinguals of diverse levels and backgrounds.  These sessions are highly interactive and designated to be able to address real problems of implementation in elementary and secondary dELD classrooms.  On completion, participants will be prepared to plan dELD lessons that are both differentiated and culturally-sustaining for students and sustainable and realistic for teachers.

    Program summary:

    In our first session, we will focus on how Eduprotcols can help Set The Tone for SEL and UDL in your classroom community. Universal Design for Learning (UDL), especially the Engagement Principle, has a strong connection to Social Emotional Learning (SEL). During this session, we will learn about the connection between SEL and UDL as we engage in Eduprotocols. 

    During our second session, we will look at how Eduprotocols can Ramp Up Rigor with the 4Cs in your classroom. One call to action in many of our standards is to prepare students for the“21st century” by ensuring students are college and career-ready. This preparation includes the use of the 4C’s (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking). Evidence of the need for these 4 C’s is embedded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL). To create truly student-centered, personalized learning opportunities, teachers must design lessons with intention. By adding a “C” to a lesson, we ramp up rigor and engagement.

    We know our students need support with their social and emotional learning- but what is it and what can I do as an educator?     In this three-day workshop, participants will understand the importance of personal narrative writing to amplify student voices and leverage their assets as diverse learners. Teachers will be encouraged to explore recent issues of social justice through authentic texts by U.S. Latinx and Latin American writers. By engaging in strategies to promote literacy and reigniting a passion for reading and writing, participants will assist students in crafting their voice as a bridge to engage with more complex texts. Participants will receive resources, including student samples, teaching strategies, and authentic texts, and be encouraged to exchange additional resources as a community of teachers and learners.

    What is the connection between feedback and assessment? What makes “good” feedback or a “good” assessment in world languages? In this two-part workshop, we will explore the role of feedback during the learning cycle, methods for providing frequent and timely feedback that helps learners make progress, and the design of powerful, performance-based assessments.

    About Nicole Naditz: Nicole Naditz, M.Ed is the Program Specialist for Instructional Technology and World Languages for San Juan Unified School District. Prior to her current role, she taught French to grades 3 through 12 for almost 25 years. Nicole is a National Board Certified Teacher and has won numerous honors including 2012 Sacramento County Teacher of the Year and finalist for California State Teacher of the Year. Most recently, she was named the 2015 National Language Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and served on California's Instructional Quality Commission, an advisory body to the State Board of Education. Nicole is also a Google Certified Innovator and Trainer and Apple Learning Academy Specialist.

  • The Stanford Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), the Monterey Bay World Language Project (MBWLP) and the Stanford World Language Project (SWLP) invite new and experienced teachers of Spanish for Heritage Learners to join this professional learning course tailored to the special needs of the Heritage Spanish classroom! This course is also appropriate for teachers of advanced Spanish classes.

    Dates: January 23, February 6, March 6, and March 27

    Time: Time: 9:00-12:00, 1:30-2:30 plus optional time for collaboration, coaching and support

    Location: Online, blend of synchronous and asynchronous sessions
