Assistive Technology for Online Learning
- Microsoft OneNote: Free for CSUMB students through Office 365: organize, write, type, speak, highlight, and annotate notes all in one place (sign up for Office 365 using CSUMB email, here).
- Otter Voice Notes: Free on all device app stores: record lectures and create digital transcripts of the recordings while being able to differentiate speakers and identify keywords.
- AudioNote: Available for free on the IOS app store: synchronize your notes with audio recordings from lectures.
- Penultimate: Available for free on the IOS app store: this application allows you to search for, write, sketch, draw or doodle notes and information on your iPad.
- Glean: Please see SDR for more information on how to obtain. Record audio and flag specific points with labels of importance to revisit later.
- Google Pixel Recorder: Record audio and receive real-time transcriptions which can be uploaded to Google Drive (only works with Google Pixel Phone).

- Kurzweil Read the Web: Google Chrome or Firefox extension, which reads online webpage content aloud.
- Kurzweil 3000: Please see SDR for information on how to obtain. Upload electronic text documents (PDFs, word documents, etc) to be read aloud to you.
- Capti-Voice: Listen to books, articles, and more on multiple devices, even without an internet connection. Hands-free, eyes-free text to speech program.
- Pericles: Text to Speech Screen Reader is a Chrome extension that works with Mac or Windows. It can be downloaded from the ChromeWeb store for free. This extension will give voice feedback and narrate all the activity going on the web browser while highlighting the area with the box that is being narrated. It will also narrate all the words, text and numbers that are typed on the keyboard so the blind people can enter the right thing.
- MobileAccessibility: Free on Android, this is a screen reader which allows you to get out of the suite and navigate the standard interface of your phone. It has a suite of 12 accessible applications (Phone, Contacts, SMS, Alarm, Calendar, Email, Web, Where am I, Apps, Settings, Notes and Explorer) which all have a simplified interface whose textual information is spoken using Nuance Vocalizer voice synthesis. You can also connect your Braille display if you prefer Braille output.
- Apple VoiceOver: (For IOS Only) uses the Mac’s operating system and is built into all of Apple’s tablets, phones, desktops, and laptops. Apple’s screen reading program is one of the best because it will describe images and graphics on the screen, allow you to magnify your screen, explain what is happening in real time, and has some customizable features. This program also possesses the ability of dictation.
- Natural Reader EDU is a free (for students) text-to-speech software for Mac and Windows which allows users to download documents and convert to MP3 audio files. It also possesses a web reader function.
- Dark Reader: A Google Chrome extension that converts every website into “dark mode”, making online navigation easier on eyes over long periods of time.
- Screen Shader: A Google Chrome extension that allows you to choose from a range of colors and set a level of shading that works for you.
- Google Calendar: Free. May be used on laptops, desktops, tablets, and cell phones. Enter appointment times, class times, work times, set aside times to study etc.
- Any.Do: Organize your tasks, lists and reminders in one easy to-do app. Any.do syncs seamlessly across all of your devices, making your to-do list accessible everywhere. This app works with IOS, Android, Windows, and Mac, and is cloud based, so wherever you leave off on one device, you can pick back up on within another device. It is free.
- Things 3: A free IOS task management app that breaks down your to-do list. You have a master checklist for every project you are working on. Your “today list” is the place you will go to find your to-dos for the day. Design your calendar in the order you want to see your events: personal, family, work and more. Set up a separate to-do list for evenings only for tasks that you need to handle when you get home from work. Rank your tasks in order of importance and day by day, you’ll find yourself becoming more organized and able to work through tasks that at first seemed overwhelming.
- Unroll Me: An email organization App FREE for Desktops and mobile devices. It removes clutter from email inboxes by clients signing up with their email accounts, and Unroll Me makes a list of all subscribed email lists, so you can easily unsubscribe from those you don’t want. Once unsubscribed, you inbox will become clutter free, so you can focus on the email you care about only, rather than letting them pile up, possibly missing important information.
- Just Read: A Google Chrome extension that creates a distraction-free reading experience by removing all but the text from web pages.
- Mercury Reader: A Google Chrome extension where users can manipulate on-page text, adjusting size, changing typeface and more.
- Reedy: Highlight a passage of text and Reedy isolates it, blocking out the rest of the page and playing the passage to you word-by-word in a technique known as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation.

- InnoCaption provides free apps for iOS and Android devices which allows DHOH users to call anywhere at any time and have a stenographer (a person whose job is to transcribe speech in shorthand) available to caption the call.
- Microsoft Translator for Education provides free resources, tools, and how-to guides for live captioning and translation in the classroom. Includes apps to translate and caption live presentations, teacher-parent conferences, study groups, and one-on-one conversations.

- Toggl helps you keep track of your daily schedule by time tracking your tasks to help you schedule your day better. $5/month on either IOS, Windows, or web-based.
- Marinara is a Pomodoro timer hosted in your chrome browser; can change length and audio cues. Ex. cues to work for 25 minutes, take a break, record progress.
- Pearson Prep is a electronic notecard creator. Make flashcards from your own notes, “smart” study sessions that adjust to your strengths and weaknesses, and is free for IOS and Android devices.
